في كتاب ثواب الأعمال باسناده إلى علي بن شجرة عن بعض أصحاب أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إذا قرأتم ” تبت يدا أبى لهب وتب ” فادعوا على أبى لهب فإنه كان من المكذبين الذين يكذبون النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وبما جاء به من عند الله عز وجل

In Kitab Thawab al-A`mal: By its isnad to `Ali b. Shajara from some of our companions from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام.

He said: Whomever recites tabbat yada abi lahabin wa tab should supplicate against Abu Lahab, for he is among those who called the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله a liar in what he came with from Allah عز وجل.

في مجمع البيان في حديث أبي من قرءها رجوت ان لا يجمع الله بينه وبين أبى لهب في دار واحدة

In Majma` al-Bayan: In the hadith of Ubay:

Whomever recites it requests that Allah does not gather him with Abu Lahab in one house.

 سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: صعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله ذات يوم الصفا فقال: يا صباحاه فأقبل إليه قريش فقالوا: مالك؟فقال: أرأيتم لو أخبرتكم ان العدو مصبحكم أو ممسيكم اما تصدقون؟قالوا: بلى، قال: فانى نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد، فقال أبو لهب: تبا لك لهذا دعوتنا جميعا فأنزل الله هذه السورة أورده البخاري في الصحيح

Sa`eed b. Jubayr from Ibn `Abbas.

He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله climbed Mount Safa that day and said: Attention everyone! So Quraysh turned to him and said: What do you want? So he said: If I told you that the enemy would attack you in your morning or at your night, would you believe? They said: Of course. He said: Surely, I am your warner, and in front of me is a severe punishment. So Abu Lahab said: Woe to you (tabban lak), is this why you called us? So Allah revealed this surah.

It was reported by Bukhari in his Sahih.

 ويروى عن أسماء بنت أبي بكر قالت: لما نزلت هذه السورة أقبلت العوراء  أم جميل بنت حرب ولها ولولة وفى يدها فهر وهي تقول: مذمما أبينا * ودينه قلينا * وأمره عصينا والنبي صلى الله عليه وآله جالس في المجلس ومعه أبو بكر، فلما رآها أبو بكر قال: يا رسول الله قد أقبلت وانا أخاف ان تراك؟قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لن تراني وقرأ قرآنا فاعتصم به كما قال وقرا: ” وادا قرأت القرآن جعلنا بينك وبين الذين لا يؤمنون بالآخرة حجابا مستورا ” فوقفت على أبى بكر ولم تر رسول الله فقالت: يا أبا بكر أخبرت ان صاحبك هجاني؟فقال: لا ورب البيت ما هجاك، فولت وهي تقول ” قريش تعلم انى بنت سيدها “

And it is reported from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr:

She said: When this surah was revealed, the one-eyed Umm Jameel bint Harb wailed, and she had a stone in her hand, and she was saying: He criticizes our father, his religion is our scorn, and his command is to disobey us. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله was sitting in a gathering and Abi Bakr was with him. When Abi Bakr saw her, he said: O Messenger of Allah, she is coming and I fear that she will see you. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله said: She will not see me. And he recited the Qur’an, so he was protected by it as he said. And he recited: “And when you recite the Qur’an, We put between you and those who disbelieve in the Hereafter an invisible veil.” (17:45) So she stood by Abi Bakr and she did not see the Messenger of Allah, so she said: O Abi Bakr, I have been informed that your companion is ridiculing me? So he said: No, by the Lord of the House, he did not ridicule you. So she left, saying: Quraysh knows that I am the daughter of its leader.

وروى أن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: صرف الله سبحانه عنى ثم إنهم يذمون مذمما وانا محمد

And it is reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله said: Allah سبحانه has protected me, for surely they are insulting “Mudhamama” and I am “Muhammad”.

 وفيه عند قوله تعالى: ” وانذر عشيرتك الأقربين ” وعن ابن عباس قال: لما نزلت هذه الآية صعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله على الصفا فقال: يا صباحاه، فاجتمعت إليه قريش فقالوا: مالك فقال؟أرأيتكم ان أخبرتكم ان العدو مصبحكم وممسيكم ما كنتم تصدقونني؟قالوا: بلى قال: ” فانى نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد ” قال أبو لهب: تبا لك ألهذا دعوتنا جميعا؟فأنزل الله عز وجل تبت يدا أبى لهب

And therein, regarding His تعالى saying: “And warn your near of kin” (26:214). From Ibn `Abbas.

He said: When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله climbed Mount Safa and said: Attention everyone! So Quraysh gathered to him and said: What do you want? So he said: If I told you that the enemy would attack you in your morning or at your night, would you believe me? They said: Of course. He said: Surely, I am your warner, and in front of me is a severe punishment. Abu Lahab said: Woe to you, is this why you called us? So Allah عز وجل revealed tabbat yada abi lahab.

 في قرب الإسناد باسناده إلى أبى الحسن موسى بن جعفر عليه السلام حديث طويل يذكر فيه آيات النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وفيه: من ذلك ان أم جميل امرأة أبى لهب أتته حين نزلت سورة تبت ومع النبي صلى الله عليه وآله أبو بكر بن أبي قحافة، فقال: يا رسول الله هذا أم جميل محفظة أي مغضبة تريدك ومعها حجر تريد ان ترميك به؟فقال: انها لا تراني فقالت: لأبي بكر أين صاحبك؟قال حيث شاء الله قالت: جئته ولو أراه لرميته فإنه هجاني واللات والعزى انى لشاعرة فقال أبو بكر: يا رسول الله لم ترك، قال: لأضرب الله بيني وبينها حجابا

In Qurb al-Isnad: By its isnad to Abu’l Hasan Musa b. Ja`far عليه السلام in a long hadith in which he mentions the miracles of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله, among which was the following:

Umm Jameela, the wife of Abu Lahab, came to him when Surat tabbat was revealed, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله was with Abi Bakr b. Abi Quhafa, so he said: O Messenger of Allah, Umm Jameel is angry, she wants you and she has a stone that she would like to pelt at you. So he said: She will not see me. So she said to Abi Bakr: Where is your companion? He said: Wherever Allah wants. She said: If I see him, I will pelt him, for he has ridiculed me, al-Lat, and al-`Uzza. Surely, I am a poetess. So Abi Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, she does not see you. He said: Allah has placed a veil between me and her.

 في تفسير علي بن إبراهيم ” تبت يدا أبى لهب ” قال: أي خسرت لما اجتمع  مع قريش في دار الندوة وبايعهم على قتل محمد رسول الله (ص) وكان كثير المال فقال الله: ما أغنى عنه ماله وما كسب سيصلى نارا ذات لهب عليه فتحرقه وامرأته قال: كانت أم جميل بنت صخر وكانت تنم على رسول الله (ص) وتنقل أحاديثه إلى الكفار حمالة الحطب أي احتطبت على رسول الله (ص) في جيدها أي في عنقها حبل من مسد أي من نار وكان اسم أبى لهب عبد مناف فكناه الله لان منافا صنم يعبدونه

In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim, tabbat yada abi lahab:

He said: He lost when he met with Quraysh in the symposium and agreed with them upon the killing of Muhammad the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله, and he was very wealthy. So Allah said: “His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained. He will burn in a fire of flame.” (111:2-3) – him and his wife will be burned. He said: Umm Jameela was the daughter of Sakhar, and she would dishonour the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله, and give news about him to the disbelievers. “Carrier of firewood” (111:4) means that she would gossip about the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله. “Around her neck is a rope of fire” (111:5) The name of Abu Lahab was `Abd Manaf, so Allah called him this because Manaf was the idol that they would worship.

 في نهج البلاغة من كتاب له عليه السلام إلى معاوية جوابا ومنا خير نساء العالمين ومنكم حمالة الحطب

In Nahj al-Balagha: From his عليه السلام letters in response to Mu`awiya: From us is the best women of the worlds, and from you is the “carrier of firewood” (111:4).
