Response to East End Madrassah’s Curriculum Incident

The story of East End Madrassah’s “antisemitic curriculum” has swept across various media outlets during the last few days. For those who are part of the institution or the larger community, this has been a fine example of one of the most apparent propaganda and fear-mongering campaigns launched against the Muslims of Canada in recent times. Passages taken out of context, words taken from different sections of the book and then presented to the audience with extreme bias has been the trend. The school has been operating for more about 4 decades (that’s older than the current Iranian Islamic government) and has seen thousands of students graduate from it over time. To date, not one student has ever been accused or charged with any terrorist or hate-crime related activity. It is also unfortunate that the vast majority of people are enslaved to whatever the media spews without putting any critical thought into it themselves (whether they are Muslims or not). There are dozens of sects within Islam itself; the media outlets generally do not define which school of thought this specific madrassah belonged to, it doesn’t define the cultural demographics of the students who attended the madrassah (many come from countries where they are prone to target killings simply because they are Shi’as). Furthermore, it takes two specific words: “crafty” and “treacherous”, both of which have very straightforward definitions in the English vocabulary, and generalize it to imply that the book was speaking about all Jews. With more than 10 levels within the Madrassah and from the hundreds of pages that are part of the various books – two words now equal to the madrassah built on the foundations of hate and “antisemitism”.

Now, the news has even reached a point where there have been attempts to tie the institution to Iran and its government (that is hilarious). This all seems like something the Muslims, and in particular the Shi’a have encountered in the past in other geographies. The police investigation is on, and inshAllah we pray that this whole drama that seems to have been carefully orchestrated, dies out and the truth prevails.

There has been a minimal, but a strong response by different individuals and of course the institution itself as well as its respected resident scholar, Syed Rizvi. Two specific lectures were given on this issue, one on Thursday night and another during the Friday prayers. This video is from yesterday’s Friday prayer sermon:

This was perhaps the part that stood out to me the most, as it speaks directly to the crux of the issue:

‎”It is amazing that an organization in Canada can put the name of a foreign country in its official name, and that is okay.

But when it comes to the Shi’a Muslims, we are told to ignore our religious and cultural ties. Let me repeat, we are told to ignore our religious and cultural ties with the Shi’a people; whether in India or Pakistan, Or Afghanistan, or Iran, or Iraq, or Bahrain or Lebanon.

We are not going to do that!”

Further responses were written by different community members. Two of which are as follow:

With reference to the recent accusations of anti-Semitism about a Toronto Islamic School, I was truly disappointed by the one-sided reaction of the media and government officials. There seems to be strong double standard with regards to Muslims and every time that a Zionist organization tries to bully Canadian Muslims by making out-of-context accusations, the media and government officials eagerly support them without understanding or investigating the issue. Muslims in Canada and Toronto enjoy a wonderful relationship with Jewish and other communities; however, organizations that represent the Zionist settler ideology of racism, hate and bullying are trying to create a climate of intimidation in our beloved country.

There are over fifty Jewish schools in the Toronto area, some of which teach texts that espouse hatred and are racist in the extreme. In order to regain public trust, the Jewish schools teaching the texts need to convince us that the problem is not systematic and institutionalized. Examples of racist and hateful text being taught in Jewish Schools in Toronto include:

* Only Jews are human. [Gentiles] are animals. (Baba Mezia 114a- 114b.)

* Even the best of the [Gentiles]should be killed. ( Babylonian Talmud)

* Gentiles’ flesh is as the flesh of asses and whose issue is like the issue of horses.

*If a heathen [Gentile] hits a Jew, the Gentile must be killed. Hitting a Jew is hitting God. (Sanhedrin 58b.)

* [Gentiles] are outside the protection of the law and God has ‘exposed their money to Israel.’ (Baba Kamma 37b.)

*Jews may use lies (‘subterfuges’) to circumvent a [Gentile]. (Baba Kamma 113a.)

*All [Gentile] children are animals. (Yebamoth98a.)

*[Gentiles] prefer sex with cows. (AbodahZarah 22a-22b.)

*Jesus is in hell, being boiled in”hot excrement. (Gittin 57a)

* Jesus was a Sorcerer, Sanhedrin 43a . Says Jesus (“Yeshu”and in footnote #6, Yeshu “the Nazarene”) was executed because he practiced sorcery.

The few paragraphs Zionist shave quoted out-of-context from thousands of pages of a curriculum in their complain;refer to a battle 1400 years ago between Jews and Muslims in Khyber. Historical accounts of both sides refer about the breach of agreement and treachery by the other side. If Muslims are being asked not to refer to their account of history than in fairness the Jewish community needs to be told not to teach their version of the event either, otherwise Muslims in Canada are being subjected to a double-standard based on Islam phobia and the bullying tactics by the Zionist settler movement. Christians and other communities have also faced similar propaganda and intimidation tactics by the same organizations.

Canadians belonging to all walks of life should resist attempts by the Canadian branches of the Zionist settler movement to influence the media and government officials and should uphold the Canadian values of fairness and justice. Muslims in Canada feel patriotic and proud to be part of this wonderful country and we hope that we will continue to live as equal citizens without feeling that we are being targeted due to Islam phobia and propaganda.

Another response was as follow:

I have to state here openly and publicly that I am extremely disappointed with the behaviour of the media and especially the national post in demonizing Islam once again and making something look like another, therefore creating another Fitna in our society.

Let us examine the texts that they have written as excerpts that seem to be “offensive” to Jewish community.

I state here that if these texts are offensive then public schools and universities should examine their texts which are taught to students in classes like > World Issues, History, Philosophy, Law, and Political Science, and even English courses.

As a student whom has been raised in this system I have found numerous times that we were being given statements suggesting

– Muslims are growing higher in population thus it will become a threat to our culture
– Muslims are immigrating to Canada in large amounts and their population must be controlled
– Muslims are terrorists
– The Muslim veil is an oppression towards women
– Palestine is not a state.

The list is endless but I have presented a few examples.

Our community has been decent enough to offer an apology, but I do not feel that it is needed on our part, rather if we are offering an apology then the rest of our society too should apologize to us for what is happening in PUBLIC SCHOOLS…run by the Government and TDSB!!

Furthermore, let’s examine these excerpts written in the national post:

Excerpts from the text

“Islam has allowed boys to engage in sports for one specific reason and that is to always keep them healthy and strong. But why should a Muslim be healthy and strong? Firstly, it is necessary to take care of the body because it is a gift from Allah. Secondly, so that you may physically be ready for jihad whenever the time comes for it.”

There is no doubt that a person needs to be physically fit for being strong and healthy and also for Jihad, but what our society has failed to understand is what is the meaning of jihad. We as Muslims have clarified several times that there is not a link between terrorism and jihad. Rather, Jihad means “struggle” and it can be against the self, it can be against anything negative or harmful in society. For example, when I see people being killed around me and I raise my voice and shout “this is wrong” this is my Jihad. If I see people in my school picking on a kid half their size and bullying and beating him, and I know I am one weak person but I run to stop them and defend that child, this is my Jihad. This email I am writing itself is my Jihad. Our society in Canada should try to understand our terminology rather than accusing us for terrorism. They are living in fear from us for no reason, while on the other hand there are those whom are in power and wish to continue their wrongful actions without being stopped in any way, they want to show this as a negative, so that nobody would raise voice against them when they go on their bullying rampage.

“Islam is a dynamic, comprehensive school that aims at the rectification of the social and economic systems of the world in a special manner. Unlike the beliefs of the ancient Romans, the Jews, and the Nazis, Islam is not restricted to a certain community of a certain race, but is for all human beings…”

Note that this statement is merely repeating history, or showing the differences in different cultures. This is present in almost all history books I have read throughout my school life. Secondly, look at the bolded part. Where is the falsehood in that? Ask any Jewish person, they will tell you about the importance of heritage in becoming a Jew. A person not raised in a Jewish family cannot be a Jew. Furthermore, Ancient Romans had similar beliefs about heritage. We can look at their laws about whom is a citizen and whom is not. Nazis were the extreme that believed no other race should survive. Right now Zionists are the same btw, who believe that Palestine should not survive as a state, but shhh we have to be quiet about that, because Canada does not want us to say anything about the reality of Zionism!!! Indeed it is filled with Zionists, that is why our government secretly funds them without informing the general public!

“No doubt any wise, humanitarian person accepts such a combat and admires it [jihad] because there is no other way to achieve the sacred ends of the Prophets.”

This text is clearly taken out of context and placed separately, it seems to be defining jihad but the newspaper has proven its biased nature by showing the text out of its meaning. It says “a humanitarian person accepts such combat”, this statement itself shows that such a person is not fighting for personal goals but defending humanity itself. I have given example that when a group in power bullies a weak or innocent person it becomes our right and duty to defend that person. Of course we have to be just in our dealings,  but we should certainly not be silent.

“End of Jewish Plots and Treacheries: Ever since the Prophet’s entry into Madina, the treacherous Jews had vehemently opposed him and his Islamic call, evoking memories of their hostility to the previous Prophet, Jesus Christ, half a millennium ago. The crafty Jews entered into an alliance with the polytheist Quraish in a bid to stamp out Islam. They conspired to kill Prophet Muhammad despite the fact that he was lenient towards them and had treated them kindly, hoping to convince them of Islam’s truth. But eventually as Jewish plots and aggressions increased, he had no choice other than to take up arms against them, in order to protect Islam and the Muslims. At the battle of Khaiber which is famous for Imam Ali’s heroic exploits, the Prophet defeated them ending Jewish intrigues and conspiracies in Arabia.”

This is not a hate speech it is merely recording history, once again I have seen so many similar texts in our public schools. I have not studied in an Islamic school but I have for a while worked in one, and I have seen a more friendly environment than a public school when it comes to respect for other cultures. This is speaking about the specific Jews that stood up against our Final Prophet (pbuh&hf) and their character was truly evil, this is not because they were Jews, indeed there were Ahle Kitab (people of the book) that have defended our Imam Hussayn (as) in the battle of Karbala, and came to our Prophet (pbuh&hf) and Imams (as) asking questions about Islam, and even forming peace treaties with them. But the evil ones amongst them whom spread oppression should be noted as evil. Its not fair that we would have to hide history because some people do not accept it, no, we will state what it is as it is.

We will speak about good as good , and about bad as bad, and nobody can stop us from that. This is why the whole world rises against us, because the bad or tyrannical people don’t want us to speak against their injustices, so they make us look like we are doing wrong.

So we have apologized for material that may have seemed offensive to them, we put forward our hand of friendship to them that perhaps they may take guidance and not make an unjust decision but their posts and especially these newspapers (i cannot begin to express my disappointment in our Canadian government and media at their stance) their posts have shown hate towards us without taking responsibility for their actions and spreading hate once again towards the Muslim community.

While much more can be said about the issue and the recurring bias of the media, the institution chose to take the approach of apology for unintentional offense and to rework their material regardless. And while Muslims may remain targeted for their views and opinions for a long time to come, the Pentagon is more than clearly going to get away with teaching its students that “America’s enemy is Islam in general, not just terrorists, and suggesting that the country might ultimately have to obliterate the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina without regard for civilian deaths“.

Update:

This is another to-the-point video response done by MaoistRevelNews2 that I thought I’d share, titled: Sun Media Lies About Islamic School

20 thoughts on “Response to East End Madrassah’s Curriculum Incident

  • wow! unbelievable. Canadian are not accusing all muslims of teaching hate, they are accusing the east end madrassah. How dare you turn this into an anti-muslim issue. It was teh east end madrassah who wrote about ‘staying fit for jihad’…it was not canadian text books who wrote against fighting muslims.

Fine with me though, keep up with your bullshit ways. Finally canadians are wising up to you and your kinds BS; its the beginig of the end for islamic immigration in canada- and its said, bc there are some good people from those countries who deserve to be here, but wont anymore bc of ignorant morons like yourself.

    • So the Canadians are not accusing all Muslims of teaching hate, yet the East End Madrassah is spreading hate against “all Jews”? Is it just me or do I smell hypocrisy & double-standards? What do you know about Jihad? Oh right – you’ve only ever learned about it through the Western Media. If Canada gets attacked and the Muslims have to defend it (even “liberal Muslims”, the type you like) – do you think that will not be considered jihad? Do you think that there is any Muslim on the planet who doesn’t believe in the concept of Jihad? Furthermore, do you think Jihad merely means to pick up arms and fight? The ignorance of the laymen is what disappoints me the most. The only solution and remedy that will make you happy is if a Muslim immigrates to Canada and decides to leave behind all their cultural and religious values. While other ethnic groups enjoy their cultural and religious heritage, the only thing that will make you happy is that if the Muslims do not enjoy the same privilege.

  • this kind of mud-slinging is the last thing we need right now.

east end madressa made a mistake in the words they used in their curriculum.

all that’s needed (and has been done) is a simple apology and a statement that muslims do not view all members of the jewish community as being this that and the other.

there’s no point in blaming a ‘bias media system’ for our shortcomings.

it’s time to grow up and accept responsibility.

    • While an apology has been given and EEM has stated that reforms will be made, the media is the one that is not putting an end to this and neither is the Zionist lobby – because clearly the “apology is not enough” for them. What is their solution? Let us create your curriculum instead!

    • You are wrong. There is a reason to point finger and blame the media because it is right.

Why let the media twist the story and make it seem like this madressa is on the foundation of teaching kids hate. Why let them tell lies about our religion. You let them do that today, tomorrow they will say the Quran teaches hate (because of stories of historical battles) and that we should prevent young children from reading it. I mean isn’t this the same thing.. The book was talking about a historical battle, it wasn’t talking about all jews. It said the Jews of the time, like we learn the romans at the time, or the germans of the time etc.

I mean let me get this straight. A priest can burn a quran in the name of free speech, the prophet that billions respect can be defamed in the name of free speech. But one can not teach students history.. Sure maybe it was a little much, but seriously it is not as big as it is made out to be.

Have you read the entire passage? Have you done your research or you just jumped to a conclusion based on what you read. Seriously, you can not just ignore this because our prophet, quran, values, morals are manipulated on a daily basis and now this is a blatant attack at our teachings.

Did you know that there so many different levels in this madressa. This was found in what, grade 8 class? That’s the same class you are learning about the history and ww2 and whatnot. Should the German students object and say no the history should not be taught because it leads to hatred towards Germans who allowed such things to happen?

I graduated from this school. I have learned a lot of great stuff from this school. I was enrolled in this school when I newly came to Canada at age 10. The friends I made here I still talk to till this day.. And seriously, if I had not gone to this madressa and made such friends I would be a different person. I mean when we moved here we lived in a bad neighborhood and

while my old childhood friends lie, cheat, steal, drink, … etc… I choose to not do such things.. And honestly I would be like them if I didn’t go to this school. I learned so much here..

This is a blatant attack at us Muslims. And no I’m not saying go “Jihad” on them and pull out the Aks and the C4s we all Muslims store in our closets. I’m saying make some noise so that the masses aren’t fooled, and that the next time they decide to do such things they think twice.

If we go abts ur way, we’ll be in for attacks one after another.

    • if your cultural and religious values include teaching hate towards jews, then yes, you should leave it behind, or better yet dont come here in the first place.

And what double standard? your argument makes no sense. The curriculum blatantly compared the jews (all OR some it doesnt matter) to nazis. They blatantly labled the jews treacherous. You will NOT find any teaching in canadian schools labeling muslims treacherous. This is NOT about you, or anti-islam sentiment. I am NOT denying that doesnt exist. it certainly does. This is about muslims preaching hate and jihad. this is about htem preaching blatant sexism. This is abou them preaching values that do NOT have place in our society.

So agian, if you ahve a problem with leaving certain cultural/religious values that conflict with canadian values when you come here, dont come. In fact, soon enough you won’t be allowed here anyways. and thank god (Edited) for that!

    • “if your cultural and religious values include teaching hate towards jews, then yes, you should leave it behind, or better yet dont come here in the first place.”

Quite frankly, our teachings don’t teach hate towards the Jews and I think 40 years of existence speaks for it self – but if you are too arrogant to admit it and want to continue living in a delusional world, I am sorry no one can help you there.

“The curriculum blatantly compared the jews (all OR some it doesnt matter) to nazis. They blatantly labled the jews treacherous.”

It labeled the Jews who the Prophet fought eventually at Khaiber treacherous – and their treachery in history during that episode is well recorded by Muslim and non-Muslim historians and is even taught in Islamic History courses at Universities.

Second, it compared the notion of invitation towards one’s religion and belief of the ancient Romans, Jews and Nazis – not that the Jews are wholly Nazis or that the Ancient Romans are wholly akin to the Nazis. Why don’t you bother reading the text in the book for yourself rather than looking at what the media is relaying to you.

“You will NOT find any teaching in canadian schools labeling muslims treacherous.”

Considering that the treacherous comment from the book was speaking of a historical event, it would be hard to find any Canadian school labeling Muslims as such because Muslims have not been treacherous towards the Canadian system during their history (which only spans a few hundred years).

“This is about muslims preaching hate and jihad. this is about htem preaching blatant sexism. This is abou them preaching values that do NOT have place in our society.”

While hate and sexism exists in differing cultures and communities, whether Muslim or not – unfortunately this specific incident itself is one of the worse attempts in connecting the two together.

The rest of your comment is nothing but an emotional rant – not worth replying back to. Grow up.

    • “So agian, if you ahve a problem with leaving certain cultural/religious values that conflict with canadian values when you come here, dont come. In fact, soon enough you won’t be allowed here anyways. and thank god (Edited) for that!”

Our values dont preach hatred towards Jews or any other religion. We are to live in harmony and respect peoples opinions. No one has embarked on the “Canadian values”. There was some problem in language which will be fixed, no one can change history. If a school teaches about the history revolving holocaust, is it a hate crime against Germans? Tomorrow I will hate all Germans because some where in the past they killed a lot of Jews.

Also the Islamaphobia and the hatred towards Muslims which has been developing is not any different than the way it was developed against Jews and if “Canadian values” mean open hatred towards Muslims (or any other religious group) and their massacre then Im ashamed of being a Canadian

  • Alhumdullilah, this is a good article, get it out into our communities more, so people understand the issue rather than just talk little about it in conversations, this is just another example of our fight to being Shia, we will always be deviated off the path, must always fight to stay on.

  • Amazing written article in my opinion, thank you for publishing this as people do need the truth many a times to lighten up their “thick” heads.

  • mashallah nice article and great speach by syed m.rizvi, we respect all humans , but we should not forget our culture and beliefs, there must be mutual understanding and dialogue and look at historical events with reasoning and intellect!

  • this is an excellent rebuttal/response! especially in the context of the videos, youve added a lot of thought in to the whole issue.. thank you brother for this tabligh!

  • The replies that have a stench of support for what the media is doing doesn’t surprise me. Our job is to educate the open minded folk who clearly see through blatant lies. Very well written article victory to truth!

  • Jazakallah for posting this great and informative article.
The method of ending a rumour is to spread truth as far as possible. We all have a responsibility to spread the truth across our communities.

  • Last week David Spiro, Greater Toronto co-chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJ) condemned an Islamic School Madrassa Text, terming the assertion Jews wanted to kill Mohammad a “horrific conspiracy theory” and “blood libel.”

Researchers have found that the same historical fact is being taught in multiple Jewish Schools in Toronto including Joe Dwek Ohr Haemet Sephardic School on Bathurst Street in Thornhill. Like other Jewish schools in Toronto, it teaches a book called “2000 years of Jewish History” by Feldheim Publishers as a text book in Grade 7 and Grade 8. On Page 43, the book describes how the sister of a Jewish leader allegedly executed and tortured by Muslims poisoned Mohammed and tried to kill him. The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs need to include all the Jewish schools in Toronto teaching this “horrific conspiracy theory” and “blood libel” in their complain or issue an apology for their gross lack of historical knowledge. It is very ironic that an organization with a foreign country’s name in its title is allowed to sow the seeds of discord between Canadian Muslim and Jewish communities that have lived in harmony for decades.

The CIJ also called the madrasah text anti-Semitic as it mentioned the Jews during the time of Mohammed as ‘treacherous’ and ‘crafty’. The history book being taught to Jewish children in Toronto calls Mohammed a “Rabid Jew-Hater” (Page 41) and uses a number of other hateful terms for Mohammed and Muslims calling them ‘Rabid Fanatics” and “Vengeful Horde”.

The Muslim community in Toronto hopes that the Jewish Schools teaching such Islamophobic materials will be investigated in the hate crime investigation. We also hope that Dalton McGuinty and other politicians who were quick to condemn the Madrassah text will not apply double standards and will issue similar statements against Islamophobia being propagated in the society. The Canadian Muslims are patriotic citizens who have lived as equal citizens in peace and harmony with other communities. We will not allow organizations that represent foreign interests and agendas to create a climate of fear, intimidation and bullying that exists in the country they represent.

  • A good summary of the event. This is a wake up call for muslims in Canada to have a unified syllabus prepared under guidance of scholars and teaching professionals.

I am glad we have all risen above our personal comfort zones to react to such a planned attack.
