Islamize your iDevice!

By Basim Ali

Do you own an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad? Well, you might as well use it for a more Islamically constructive purpose, if you do (no point in it being an ‘iDevice’ if you use it like any other device now, is there?).

Being an iPhone user myself for several months now, I’ve come across some incredibly useful Islamic apps. So I thought of making a list of all the English, Islamic (most of them Shia) apps I’ve come across and use regularly, for everyone to benefit from (don’t worry, I’ve only included the ones which are free!).

iQuran Lite

This is a collection of audio recitations of the Holy Qur’an. Each verse is first recited in Arabic followed by its translation in English.
(note: you may find more than one version of this app; they are either the exact same app or just in a different language)

alQibla
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/alqibla/id322401779?mt=8
– Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
– Requires iOS 3.0 +
I would say this is one of my personal favorites. Why? It offers Adhan alerts (Imami timings) AND gives you the Qibla direction. From what I’ve experienced, the timings as well as the direction of the Qibla it shows are extremely accurate (as long as you’re connected to the internet).

– Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

Arabic and English translation of Dua Kumayl.

Although this is an Arabic app and does not offer any English translations/transliterations, it is pretty easy to navigate through for those who can read basic Arabic. This app has the audio recitations only.

These would be pretty much all of the ones I could find.  You can also find some good Shia podcasts in iTunes library. Also, there are loads of free apps available with Halal food guides. I haven’t really used any of these, and don’t really know how reliable they are, so if you choose to use any of them please make sure they’re dependable, first.  Additionally, to read (and save) pdf files like e-books use the iBooks ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8 ) app.

Finally, another tip I’d like to share is that if you have a JailBroken iPhone, you might want to get this ‘Package’ or app called ‘MxTube’. Just go to ‘Cydia’ → Search → type in ‘MxTube’ → download it.
This app is one designed to download YouTube videos so that you can view them when you’re not connected to the Internet. Now you can download all the Qur’an, duas, lectures, etc. you want from YouTube directly.
